FORT LAUDERDALE – South Florida’s premiere arts collective noted for its thoughtful and bold creations, will host an exhibition and showcase to transform how the community sees itself. “Re:Vision†is 1310 Gallery’s 4th Annual May Arts Extravaganza. Every May since 2009, Nerissa Street, a teaching artist and community advocate, has hosted an arts and performance celebration to bring together art and a local community cause. Using 3 floors of gallery space in the Historic Sailboat Bend community, she brings together sculptors, 2D artists, performers, and a fashion designer to challenge and inspire.
Then, there’s the cause. Re:Vision raises awareness about Voices for Children of Broward County, a non-profit that provides financial assistance for the Guardian ad Litem program. Guardians advocate for the best interests of children removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or abandonment. They give children the support, encouragement, resources and assistance they need during this difficult time. Voices' goal is to ensure every Broward County child in the dependency system has the support of a volunteer Guardian ad Litem.
“It’s the job of the cultural artist to transform the way you see the common things,†Street says. “Innovation is how we thrive—and how we make bad things better.†Add to that the fact that the event “makes things better†for abused and neglected children in Broward County, and you’ve got a reason to get up and go.
